Far Better!

Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, a minister in the holy places, in the true tent that the Lord set up, not man. For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; thus it is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer. Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all, since there are priests who offer gifts according to the law. They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying, “See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain.” (Hebrews 8:1-5 ESV)

When we consider the system God instituted with Israel in the OT–the sacrificial system, the high priest and the covenant–one marvels today how incomplete it really was AND was intended to be.

Today, Jesus is our High Priest.  He is at the right hand of throne of the Majesty in heaven, “a minister in the holy places, in the true tent (or tabernacle) that the Lord set up, not man” (vv. 1-2). AMEN!

Our High Priest, needs no sacrifice offered for Himself, as the high priest of old had to.  Christ is far better mediator because His work on Calvary has provided a far better covenant.  The promises of this far better covenant that we have today are stated in verses 8-12.

The first covenant had faults (because of sinful humanity).  Thus the need for a new covenant.  The new covenant was not plan B.  This was in fact God’s plan A to show the short-comings of plan B (old covenant)!

Meditate on the promises of the New Covenant made possible by our High Priest who is our mediator and our sacrifices–so underserved by us!

A Prayer for the New Year

“Lord, thank you for your grace and mercy to see a new year.  I pray that you will help me guard my time with you.  That I will make that time to start with you as Jesus did every day.  I pray that everything and everyone else will take their place behind you!

Lord, I pray for my spouse.  I pray that this year will be a wonderful growth year in her walk with you – to levels never before experienced.  I pray for her health and that our love will continue to grow for each other as it has over the years.

Lord, my prayer for my children for this new year is one that includes a growth in their desire and passion for You!  Let them see the truth of who they are in Christ.  Let them see clearly their roles in their own families and that they may desire to model their particular roles as it relates to Christ and His relationship to the Church.  In this materialistic society, please teach them the vanity of riches.  Give them ministry opportunities this year that will enable them to see You hand at work in their lives.  Protect them Lord from Satan’s filthy paws.  He desires to destroy them.  Protect them from illicit relationships of all types that can develop!

For my grandchildren I pray for health and protection.  Protect their eyes and ears and what they see and hear.  Help us to be mindful of our role of protecting them in this area as well.

May this year be a year in which we all see a demonstration of your power in and through us.

“11 Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty. Everything in the heavens and on earth is yours, O Lord, and this is your kingdom. We adore you as the one who is over all things. 12 Wealth and honor come from you alone, for you rule over everything. Power and might are in your hand, and at your discretion people are made great and given strength.
13 “O our God, we thank you and praise your glorious name! 14 But who am I, and who are my people, that we could give anything to you? Everything we have has come from you, and we give you only what you first gave us! 15 We are here for only a moment, visitors and strangers in the land as our ancestors were before us. Our days on earth are like a passing shadow, gone so soon without a trace.”
  (1 Chronicles 29:11-15 NLT)
